There are many competitions and championships where rugby enthusiasts can watch epic games between skilled players of star teams. In rugby union, there is also what is called as a test match. It is actually an international match in which two senior national team play the game. In this match, the team must be recognized by at least one of the team of national governing bodies. This might be a bit confusing because even some team are not representing a particular single country. However, the international games themselves are still considered test matches.
World rugby regulation
According to World Rugby’s regulations, there is no thing to define a test match. International match is defined as a match played by two national representative teams that is selected by Unions. Therefore, regardless of the decision of their opponents, test match status as well as caps are awarded by either team’s governing body in rugby union. However, the both teams’ governing body don’t have to recognize the match as test match in order for caps to be awarded.
The rules of rugby union game themselves are a bit confusing especially for new fans. However, every match in rugby union is always interesting because to have to keep track of the entire game so you can follow what is going on. As for the test match, it is an international match involving two senior national team of a nation. Recognition is different between the test match of senior teams outside of an official developmental side of a top tier nation and a nation outside the traditional top tier. It usually depends on the lower-tier union’s policy. The test matches may be fully capped for the national team or may be not. The change in policy usually affects how the match is recognized.

Test matches also exists in women’s rugby. The matters are less clear in women’s rugby. The very first test match was taken place in 1982. the match involved Netherlands and France. However, the sport itself was not accepted or recognized widely by most of the existing national Unions. It was not accepted or recognized by the International Rugby Board for many years. There was no significant interest attracting the media at that time.
It is widely known that some unions don’t even recognized any test played officially especially the test that is played before they become responsible for women’s game. The IRB themselves only recognized test match in women’s rugby just recently. They recognize the first two women’s World Cup indeed. Meanwhile, it cannot be the same for the French Union or FFR because they doesn’t even list any games before 1989.
